An ancient mining town of Middle Gemer Region.
The first written record of Jelšava comes from 1243.The historical town centre includes the Coburg Family Manor-House, the Town Hall, The Roman- Catholic Church, The Evangelic Church, the town inn and the burgher’s houses. Every year in June the traditional festival of gastronomy takes place here – Championship in cooking of Gemer’s balls and the unique The Night Fire-Fighting Competition. The access to the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave (UNESCO) directs through the holiday resort Hrádok.
