The fi rst written mention of the existence of Oponice comes from 1244 from the documents of the Nitra Chapter. Oponice was divided into Veľké Oponice and Malé
Oponice until around 1910. Approximately in the center of the village is the church of St. Peter and Paul. It is fi rst mentioned in historical sources in 1244. On the south
side of the church is the tomb of the Aponi family. Oponický Castle, located above the village in the Tribeč Mountains, is one of the oldest monuments. The castle is
freely accessible to the public. Every year, usually on the last Saturday of September, the village of Oponice organizes the event “Middle Ages at Oponic Castle”, where
swordsmen, archers, falconers will be presented with a program, and a presentation of archaeological fi nds found during the ongoing restoration of the castle ruins. Other residences include the socalled Great Manor. Currently, there is a hotel in the manor house, and in the library there is an exhibition of preserved books from the original library of the Aponi family and the library of the Zay family from Uhrovec. The socalled Small Manor or Marcibányiovský manor house. In the manor house, you can see an exhibition mainly of furniture, hunting trophies and sacred objects. On the ground fl oor, the exhibition is dedicated to period of socialism, historical bicycles, motorcycles and The World War 2. The mansion is open to the public. The youngest monument of the village is the former monastery. The building is currently closed to the public.
